CHEMCO Course Description:
The CHEMCO course (Full form: Advanced Training for Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations) is 10 days DG Shipping approved structured course designed to provide specialized training for Masters, Chief Engineer Officers, Chief Mates, Second Engineer Officers, and personnel responsible for cargo operations on chemical tankers. Upon successful completion of this course, trainees will be able to:
- Identify and understand chemical tanker designs, systems, equipment, instrumentation, and controls used in cargo handling.
- Recognize the physical and chemical properties of chemical cargoes, the associated hazards, and the necessary control measures.
- Implement proper planning, checklists, and time management for cargo operations.
- Conduct risk assessments and apply occupational health and safety procedures relevant to chemical tanker operations.
- Apply safe procedures for loading, unloading, handling, and monitoring cargo during transit.
- Ensure compliance with MARPOL and other IMO regulations, as well as industry best practices.
- Promote safety awareness and take necessary precautions to prevent pollution.
- Effectively respond to emergencies and coordinate emergency shutdown procedures.
This course equips participants with the knowledge and competence required to safely manage and oversee all aspects of chemical tanker cargo operations
Eligibility for CHEMCO Course
To attend the CHEMCO Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below.
- Hold a Certificate of Proficiency as a Rating in charge of a Navigational or Engineering watch, OR have completed the required sea time to be eligible for a Certificate of Competency examination.
- Hold a valid Certificate of Competency as an officer.
- Possess a Certificate of Proficiency for Basic Training in Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations.
- Have at least three months of approved sea-going service on chemical tankers within the last 60 months.
- Alternatively, have completed at least one month of approved onboard training on a chemical tanker in a supernumerary capacity, including a minimum of three loading and three unloading operations, documented in an approved training record book as per Section B-V/1 of the STCW Code
- Medical Fitness
- Must be medically fit as per the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.
- A medical fitness certificate from an approved doctor is required.
- Vision and hearing should meet the required standards.
E-Learning Requirement:-
- As per DG Shipping Guidelines, candidates can only appear for the final examination (Exit Exam/Institute Exam) after successfully completing the E-Learning Module of the course
Documents Required for CHEMCO Course
To apply for the CHEMCO course you need a list of documents such as:
- INDOS
- Valid Medicals by a D.G.Shipping Approved Doctor (Click here for the list of DGS Approved Doctors)
- OCTCO or CTFC Certificate (D.G.Shipping Approved)
- CDC with a proof of sea service
- If the sea service and the certificate details are updated on the Seafarer Profile, then the seafarer profile can be submitted.

The Advanced Training for Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations (CHEMCO / ATCCO) course equips seafarers with the essential knowledge and skills required to effectively manage and respond to chemical tanker operations. The training ensures a comprehensive understanding of chemical tanker cargo handling, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance. The training covers:
- Knowledge of chemical tanker designs, systems, and equipment
- Knowledge of pump theory and characteristics including types of cargo pumps and their safe operation
- Proficiency in tanker safety culture and implementation of safety management system
- Knowledge and understanding of monitoring and safety system including the emergency shutdown system
- Ability to perform cargo measurements and calculations
- Knowledge of the effect of bulk liquid cargoes on trim and stability and structural integrity
- Development and application of cargo-related operation plans, procedures and checklists
- Ability to calibrate and use monitoring and gas-detection systems, instruments and equipment
- Ability to manage and supervise personnel with cargo-related responsibilities
- Knowledge and understanding of the chemical and the physical properties of noxious liquid substances
- Understanding the information contained in a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
- Knowledge and understanding of the hazards and control measures associated with chemical tanker cargo operations
- Knowledge and understanding of dangers of non-compliance with relevant rules/regulations
- Knowledge and understanding of safe working practices, including risk assessment and personal shipboard safety relevant to chemical tanker
- Knowledge and understanding of chemical tanker emergency procedures
- Actions to be taken following collision, grounding or spillage
- Knowledge of medical first aid procedures on board chemical tankers, with reference to the Medical First Aid Guide for Use in Accidents involving Dangerous Goods (MFAG)
- Understanding of procedures to prevent pollution of the atmosphere and the environment
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and other relevant IMO instruments, industry guidelines and port regulations as commonly applied
- Proficiency in the use of the IBC Code and related documents

How to download CHEMCO Course Certificate?

What is the CHEMCO Certificate Validity?
- The CHEMCO STCW certificate is valid indefinitely, while the DCE (Dangerous Cargo Endorsement) certificate is valid for 5 years.
To apply for a DCE certificate, follow these steps:
- Under the ‘Seafarer’ section, click on ‘DC Endorsement GMDSS Radio Operator’.
- Select ‘Application for DC Endorsement for Advanced (Level II)’ and proceed with the application.
The DCE certificate is system-generated and will be dispatched to your registered address within 3 to 15 days via post.
The fee for the Advanced DCE is ₹4500.
