ECDIS Course Description
ECDIS stands for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems. The course aims to provide the knowledge, skill, and understanding of ECDIS and electronic charts to the extent needed to navigate vessels whose primary means of navigation is ECDIS safely. The course emphasizes both the application and learning of ECDIS in various contexts.
The seafarers who complete this course shall be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS navigation and electronic charts to undertake the duties of a navigational watch officer defined by STCW Code, as amended.
ECDIS Course Training Requirement
- The Candidate undertaking this course must have completed his pre-sea training for deck cadets and sea service of not less than 6 months as a deck Cadet.

- Deck ratings who have completed sea service for Certificate of Competency as Second Mate FG or NWKO- NCV and have attended the relevant competency course.
- Candidate shall have a certificate for ROSC and ARPA and have at least 3 months of sea service associated with bridge watch-keeping duties under the supervision of a qualified officer.
- Candidate should also be familiar with personal computing operating systems, keyboards, and mice or trackballs.
Documents Required for ECDIS Course
To apply for the ECDIS course you need a list of documents such as:
- INDoS Id
- CDC with proof of Sea Service.
- ROC and ARPA certificate.
- Valid Medical Certificate by a DG Shipping Approved Doctor. (Click here for the list of DGS Approved Doctors).
- A valid passport
ECDIS Course Details
The ECDIS course equips seafarers with the essential knowledge and skills required for the navigation of the ship. The training covers:
- Handle ENC data, licenses, and update files.
- Position indicator, including emulation of fixed quality and, in the instance of GNSS, satellite constellation.
- Alternative position source, Heading indicator, true and magnetic, with graphic course recording, speed indicator, depth indicator, ARPA tracked target data, AIS, including control of static data and messaging.
- Audio for navigation and assessment systems when fitted.
- Communication between all ships and the instructor.
- Provide adequate and well-lit space for plotting on paper charts as the required means of backup required for a single ECDIS installation.
