BST Course Description
The Basic Safety Course (BST or STCW Basic Training) is mandatory for all seafarers before boarding a ship. The BST Course includes various other courses that make the seafarer ready for any kind of emergency onboard such as fire, flooding, abandoning of the ship, and other medical emergencies.
Eligibility for BST Course
To attend the BST Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below.
- Age Requirement
- Must be at least 18 years old. .
- Educational Qualification
- Minimum qualification: 10th pass.
- Medical Fitness
- Must be medically fit as per the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.
- A medical fitness certificate from an approved doctor is required.
- Vision and hearing should meet the required standards.
- Nationality & Identity Proof
- Valid passport or national identity document (as per country regulations).
- No Criminal Record
- Some training institutes may require a police clearance certificate if you had any record of offense.
Documents Required for BST Course
To apply for the BST course you need a list of documents such as:
- INDoS Id
- Valid Medical Certificate by a DG Shipping Approved Doctor.
- A valid passport
- Some colleges can also ask for a mark sheet of 10th from a recognized board.
BST Course Details
BST Course as the name suggests is the most basic course which is compulsory for every seafarer to complete to be eligible to join the Merchant Navy.
The Basic Safety Training Course has 4 parts:
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
- Elementary First Aid
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
PSSR Course
The PSSR STCW course teaches seafarers how to stay safe and work well with others on a ship. It covers basic safety rules, emergency steps, and how to prevent accidents. This training helps crew members understand their duties and keep the ship a safe place for everyone. These are some topic that comes under the PSSR Course:
- Ship Familiarization
- Emergency Procedures
- Hazardous Work or Process Onboard Ship
- Communication
PST Course
PST course or personal survival techniques is a course that teaches you about the procedure and process you should follow at the time of distress such as abandoning ship, or the process to follow in lifeboats and life rafts. PST course includes:
- Survival Crafts and Survival Boats
- Life-Saving Appliances on Lifeboats and Rafts.
- Abandoning Ship and Survival at Sea.
- Pyrotechnics and Their Uses.
EFA Course
The Elementary First Aid (EFA) STCW course teaches seafarers basic lifesaving skills for medical emergencies on a ship. It covers how to treat injuries, perform CPR, and provide first aid until medical help arrives. EFA Course mainly includes:
- Medical Equipments Onboard
- Procedure to Follow After Medical Emergency
- CPR and How to Use AEDs.
- Positioning of Patients and Rescue Techniques
- First Aid for Different Injuries and Illness.
FPFF Course
The Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF) STCW course teaches seafarers how to prevent and fight fires on a ship. It covers fire safety rules, using fire-fighting equipment, and handling emergencies. This training helps the crew to understand:

BST Course Fees

Complete Process of BST Exit Exam
1. E-Learning Requirements for BST Exit Exam
- Minimum Study Hours: 36 hours
- Passing Marks: 50%
2. Steps to Complete E-Learning for BST Course:
- Visit the DG Shipping website and access the e-learning portal.
- Click on Modular Courses, enroll in the Course, and log in with face verification.
- Complete the required e-learning hours and attempt the assessment exam.
- Upon passing, candidates become eligible for 11-day classroom training at a DG Shipping-approved MTI.
- After classroom training, candidates must take the Exit Exam on the DG Shipping website.
3. BST Exit Exam Details
- BST Course consists of 4 subjects (PST, PSSR, EFA, FPFF) so you need to pass the exit exam of all these 4 subjects to get the BST Certificate.
- After completing all of the above courses in 11 days you will be called for the Exit Exam where you need to pass each subject separately. If you fail any exam then you have to retake the exam. Once you pass all 4 examinations, you will receive a BST Certificate which will be valid for 5 years stating that you have completed the BST from a particular college.
